The African (Cape) Buffalo is the most formidable bovid in Africa. The Buffalo’s great strength and flexibility allows it to live in many diverse regions, from sea level to mountains, from desert to dense rain forest, through rivers and swamps – it is one of the most successful African mammals, and their grazing style prepares the ground for other animals. Herds range from as few as ten to thousands of animals. Some individuals will adopt the role of trusted “pathfinders” leading the herd, while others act as flank and rear herd protectors, providing great strength in unity. A lion attacking a buffalo will always be challenged. The herd will face such attacks head on with sharp horns facing their attackers, making it exceptionally difficult for any predator to seize a buffalo. Young, old, healthy or injured, all are protected by the “team spirit” of the herd.
